Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

Introduction to Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) is a groundbreaking, non-invasive treatment option for patients with various types of cancer and neurological conditions. At Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC), we provide patients with a precise and effective treatment compared to traditional surgery. Our state-of-the-art equipment and experienced medical team ensure that patients receive the highest quality of care.

What is Stereotactic Radiosurgery?

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) is a form of radiation therapy that precisely targets tumours and abnormal tissues with high doses of radiation while minimising exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. Unlike conventional surgery, SRS does not require any incisions. Instead, it uses detailed imaging to guide focused beams of radiation to the exact location of the tumour. This precision makes SRS an excellent option for treating tumours and other problems in the brain, neck, lungs, liver, spine and other parts of the body that are difficult to reach or treat with traditional surgery.

Stereotactic radiosurgery of the brain and spine is typically completed in a single session. Body radiosurgery treats lung, liver, adrenal and other soft tissue tumours, and treatment typically involves multiple (three to five) sessions.

Benefits of SRS Radiosurgery

At SJMC, our SRS radiosurgery services are supported by state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Our centre is equipped with advanced medical equipment such as the Tomotherapy Radixact X9 with synchrony, Varian Truebeam Linear Accelerator (LINAC), and Exactrac Dynamic which are known for their precision and effectiveness in targeting and treating tumours. These allow us to deliver high doses of radiation with pinpoint accuracy, significantly reducing the risk of damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Patients undergoing SRS at SJMC can benefit from:

  • Non-Invasive Treatment: No incisions or hospital stays are required, allowing for a quicker recovery.
  • High Precision: Advanced imaging and radiation delivery systems ensure precise targeting of the tumour.
  • Reduced Side Effects: By focusing radiation on the tumour and sparing healthy tissue, patients experience fewer side effects compared to traditional radiation therapy.
  • Shorter Treatment Time: Many SRS treatments can be completed in a single session or 3 to 5 sessions, making it a convenient option for patients.

ExacTrac Dynamic®

Sub-millimetric precision in patient positioning and monitoring during Radiotherapy.

Improved patient comfort & flexibility

Patients can breathe freely with a less constrictive head mask and a less rigid immobilisation device.

Enhanced treatment precision

Combining surface, thermal and x-ray tracking systems ensures that the patient’s position is highly accurate, which is crucial for targeting tumours with precision.

Protects patient’s healthy tissues

Automatic beam-hold manages motion in real time if movement is detected, whether voluntary or involuntary, like breathing.
