Gynaecologists and Obstetric Specialists at SJMC Hospital, Malaysia

Obstetrics and gynaecology are branches of medicine that specialise in the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth and in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the female reproductive organs. They are specialist doctors in women's health, combining both specialities.

Obstetrics primarily involves care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. They also deal with the health of the fetus, and their duties include monitoring of the womb throughout gestation.

An obstetrical condition is a problem linked to pregnancy or birth. It can affect a pregnant woman or the fetus.

Gynaecology deals with reproductive health and the functions and diseases specific to women. A gynaecologist focuses on reproductive care, and a gynaecologist doesn't treat people who are pregnant or deliver babies, but specialises in the female reproductive system.

They diagnose and treat reproductive system disorders such as:

  • endometriosis
  • infertility
  • ovarian cysts
  • pelvic pain

They may also care for people with ovarian, cervical, and other reproductive cancers. Some gynaecologists also practice as obstetricians.

When Should You Visit Your Obstetrics and Gynaecology Doctor?

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG) recommends girls to have their first gynecological visit between the ages of 13 and 15. It is advised that a girl should make an appointment to see a gynaecologist at any age if she has any medical issues or questions.

Whenever you take the home pregnancy test, and the result confirms that you are pregnant, you still need to make an appointment with an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. We recommend that you make an appointment with our doctor for your first prenatal visit within eight weeks of your last menstrual period.

We also recommend you to make an appointment when you think you may be pregnant or you are around 6-8 weeks into your pregnancy. Your first appointment may be with a midwife, your GP (General Practitioner) or at a women’s health clinic or hospital nearest to you.

They can provide you with prenatal care and help you plan for your pregnancy. You may wish to meet with a variety of doctors before choosing one to take over your care.

Some of the tests that your gynaecologist may perform include:

  • blood pressure
  • body weight and body mass index measurement
  • breast exam to check for abnormalities
  • Pap smear test to check for cervical cancer
  • pelvic exam to check for abnormal lesions or discharges
