Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine involves using small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases and conditions. Scans carried out include bone studies, thyroid studies, cardiac studies, studies to assess kidney function, studies to assess the lung function and diagnosing pulmonary embolus (blockage of the main artery for the lungs). Nuclear medicine scans use small amounts of radioactive tracer, usually given by injection, which help our doctors get pictures of the inside of your body.

Unlike other imaging techniques that focus on depicting structures (bones, ligaments, organs, etc) within the body, nuclear medicine imaging exams focus on depicting physiologic processes within the body.
