83 Secondary School Students Get Hands-on Nursing Experience with SJMC

Subang Jaya Medical Centre teams up with Cahaya Sin Chew to offer nursing experience workshop for 83 secondary school students.

Students were exposed to a range of nursing skills during the workshop, including CPR.

Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) and Cahaya Sin Chew collaborated to host an engaging workshop titled "Nurse Quest: A Journey into Healthcare!" This workshop drew the participation of 83 secondary school students who had the opportunity to get a firsthand taste of what it's like to be a nurse in a hospital setting.

Ms. Ng Ching See, Director of Nursing at SJMC, shared her 26-year-long journey in nursing, including three years of specialised training. Her dedication to the profession has never wavered. She explained that many misconceptions exist about nursing, and people often underestimate the wealth of professional knowledge and certifications required to deliver the best care and compassion to patients.

Ms. Ng stressed that nursing goes far beyond administering injections and medications. It's about providing holistic care, active listening, patience, and being the trusted partner of doctors. Thus, she hoped that this workshop would provide participants with a deeper insight into the role of nurses, their responsibilities, and the working environment they navigate.

With the guidance of experienced healthcare professionals, the students were divided into four groups to visit various hospital departments, including the paediatric ward, labour room, ICU, and the haemodialysis unit. In these diverse settings, they were exposed to a range of nursing skills, such as chest percussion for airway clearance, breathing exercises during labor, defibrillation for patients, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). These hands-on experiences enabled them to gain a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted work of nurses and the essential skills they employ.

Representatives from all four groups expressed newfound admiration for the challenges faced by mothers after witnessing a simulated childbirth process in the maternity ward. This experience served as a poignant reminder for each student to express gratitude to their own mothers. Some students also learned that CPR does not involve mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but rather emphasises continuous chest compressions. Gaining proficiency in this life-saving technique can be essential when facing emergency situations where every second counts.

Throughout the workshop, SJMC's cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Kenny Cheng, and paediatric dermatologist, Dr. Jenny Tan Yen Ling, were invited to share their experiences of collaborating with nurses in their daily work. Their insights provided attendees with a more comprehensive understanding of the critical role that nurses play in the healthcare ecosystem.
