Overcoming Multiple Myeloma with Personalised Treatment

Maslina Muhammad
Multiple Myeloma Survivor

During a routine health check-up, Ms Maslina received a report that showed some abnormalities in her blood. Further investigation included various tests, including a bone marrow biopsy, revealing she had Multiple Myeloma.

Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cell. Plasma cells are a type of white blood cell located inside your bone marrow that helps with your immune system. When fighting an infection, these plasma cells produce antibodies to attack viruses or bacteria. The malignant plasma cells can multiply rapidly, which results in a reduced production of health blood cells in the bone marrow.

Given the early detection of her aggressive disease, Dr Haris, her treating doctor recommended a treatment plan comprising chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant (also known as bone marrow transplant) to achieve long-term remission.

Before committing to the treatment, Ms Maslina sought second opinions to make an informed decision. She realised the importance of personalising treatment based on the cancer type, stage and overall health condition.

“I learned that each person’s journey is unique, and finding the right perspective of what treatment is suitable can be a deeply personal experience,” she shares.

Ms Maslina shared that the treatment experience has tranformed her life values. “I embrace a ‘DO IT TODAY’ mentality to overcome procrastination.”

Despite cancer cells still present, their reduction post treatment brings her gratitude.

Cancer has affected this 53-year-old working mother’s cognitive abilities and physicwl movements, yet she remains resilient, nurturing her love for reading and looks forward to retirement to cherish moments with her family.
