Empowering Community Health
SJMC empowers communities to thrive.
Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC), established in 1985, operates as a multi-disciplinary tertiary hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is part of Asia OneHealthcare (A1Health) and is recognized for its excellence in delivering specialized healthcare services. SJMC provides comprehensive patient care across various fields, holding both Joint Commission International (JCI) and Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) accreditations. It also holds the distinction of being the first hospital in the Asia-Pacific region to be recognized as a Centre of Excellence for Oncology Services by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI).
SJMC has embedded a deep commitment to community welfare within its mission and activities. As a healthcare institution, it aims to bridge gaps in medical accessibility and contribute to the wellbeing of underserved populations. Through structured stakeholder engagement, SJMC identifies pressing health concerns in local communities and collaborates with governmental bodies, NGOs, and healthcare professionals to address them. Its initiatives are guided by the principles of targeted impact, alignment with core competencies, and measurability, ensuring that every project delivers tangible benefits to society.
The Global Surgery Initiative (GSI) stands as a flagship example of SJMC's community outreach. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists (MSA) and supported by the Ministry of Health, brings advanced surgical care to rural hospitals in Sarawak, which often lack specialist resources. Through this program, SJMC’s medical professionals perform life-saving surgeries, sharing their expertise with local medical staff. More than 50 complex surgeries have been completed through GSI, significantly improving the quality of life for patients in these underserved regions. SJMC plans to continue the initiative in 2025, further empowering local healthcare providers through enhanced training and support.
In alignment with its goal to promote public health, SJMC also introduced the cervical cancer campaign titled “If Not Now, When? #endcervicalcancer.” Partnering with the ROSE Foundation, this program provides free, self-sampling HPV screening kits to underserved women in Selangor. The campaign not only encourages early detection but also reduces barriers to traditional screening methods, empowering women to take control of their health. Over 300 screening kits were distributed in 2023, valued at RM120,000, with follow-up care offered to those who tested positive. The initiative exemplifies SJMC’s commitment to impactful healthcare interventions and plans for continued outreach in future phases.

Another initiative, Nurse Quest: A Journey into Healthcare, reflects SJMC’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals. Collaborating with Cahaya Sin Chew, SJMC offers secondary school students an immersive experience within its hospital departments. Participants receive hands-on training in essential nursing skills, such as CPR, chest percussion, and defibrillation, under the guidance of experienced medical staff. The initiative has successfully sparked interest among students, with over 20 participants expressing a desire to pursue careers in healthcare. SJMC further supports these aspiring professionals through scholarships that cover tuition, accommodation, and monthly allowances, along with guaranteed employment upon graduation.
SJMC’s engagement with the community extends beyond these core programs. It actively contributes to public health awareness by offering health screenings during Subang Jaya's monthly Car Free Day and provides free mammograms to underserved women in conjunction with Pink October. These initiatives underscore the hospital’s long-standing relationship with the community, ensuring accessible healthcare for all.
Through strategic collaborations, SJMC demonstrates a holistic approach to healthcare and community development. Its initiatives are designed not only to address immediate health needs but also to foster long-term self-reliance among the communities it serves. Whether through advanced surgical interventions, preventive health campaigns, or educational programs, SJMC exemplifies the potential of healthcare institutions to drive meaningful change in society.
