Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) Empowers Cancer Patients with Breakthrough Synchrony® Technology for Precise Treatment on Moving Tumours

Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) has introduced an innovative approach to cancer treatment, revolutionising patient care with the advanced Synchrony® technology integrated into its Radixact® System. This groundbreaking addition is transforming the landscape of cancer treatment, particularly for patients with moving tumours in the lungs and prostate, by ensuring highly accurate radiation dose delivery while minimising exposure to healthy tissues.

The incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven Synchrony technology at SJMC enables an unparalleled level of precision in targeting tumours affected by bodily movements like respiration and digestion, as well as patient motion. This unique technology adjusts the radiation beam's movement in perfect synchronisation with the tumour's motion, allowing continuous delivery of radiation during natural breathing patterns.

Since its installation in July 2022, SJMC has treated numerous patients, including 16 with prostate cancer and 3 with lung cancer, utilising the Radixact X9 equipped with Synchrony technology. This innovative approach has facilitated Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), enhancing both safety and patient experience throughout the treatment process. Notably, the reduced margins and accurate tumour tracking significantly contribute to effective tumour treatment while safeguarding normal tissues from adverse effects.

Mr. Rosli Bin Mohd Zain is the first patient to benefit from Synchrony at SJMC.

The first patient to benefit from Synchrony at SJMC, Mr. Rosli Bin Mohd Zain, shared his positive experience. Diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018, Mr. Rosli underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy before the discovery of a recurring small tumour in his right lung. Consultant clinical oncologist, Dr. Yap Beng Khiong, recommended SBRT using Synchrony, emphasising its precise targeting and minimised impact on surrounding tissues. Mr. Rosli's treatment with Synchrony was painless, with minimal discomfort, highlighting the attentive care provided by Dr. Yap and the multi-disciplinary medical team.

Catherine Lee, Director of the Cancer & Radiosurgery Centre at SJMC, emphasised the centre's commitment to personalized cancer treatment. The integration of Synchrony with the Radixact System allows for more accurate targeting of moving tumours, broadening the scope of patients benefiting from customised radiation treatment. Lee stated, "We were able to deliver very accurate and precise treatments more quickly, minimising the impact of the treatment on patients’ lives. This means patients can get back to normalcy sooner with better cost management on their treatment plan."

The Radixact System, serving as a non-invasive and highly precise treatment option for tumours, offers integrated daily imaging to guide each treatment session effectively. Utilising image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT), this technology ensures a precise radiation dose conforming to the tumour while minimising exposure to healthy tissues.

Patients seeking non-invasive radiation therapy options, including the Radixact System, are encouraged to contact SJMC at +603 5639 1212 to schedule an appointment with experienced physicians for personalised discussions on suitable treatment options.
